"Walking into Advent can be like walking through the wardrobe."
With its enchanting themes of snow and cold, light and darkness, meals and gifts, temptation and sin, forgiveness and hope--and even an appearance by Father Christmas--C. S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe fits naturally into the Advent season. As the reader seeks a storied king and anticipates the glorious coming of Christmas, these twenty-eight devotions alternate between Scripture and passages from the novel to prompt meditation on Advent themes. Each devotion also includes questions for reflection. The book also provides several resources for churches, including four sessions for small group discussion and ideas for creating a "Narnia Night" for families. Readers will ultimately come to know God better while journeying through Narnia.
Advent in Narnia by Heidi Haverkamp offers a refreshing, new perspective for Advent combining the Chronicles of Narnia (specifically The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) along with the traditional focus of Advent for the season. It is a creative and unique concept and one the author states is to "... my purpose for writing this book is not to help you to know Narnia better but to know God better."
The chapters are short, engaging and insightful. They start with a Biblical quote, move on to the message and end with questions for reflections. The author provides prompts for each chapter letting you know what portion of the book to read. She also suggests the option of following along with the movie and has added a wonderful list at the back of the book (Appendix A) of the different versions that have been made.
At the end, Ms. Haverkamp offers ideals for a 'Narnia night for Families' that can be for church gathering or scaled down to an individual family night. She also offers recommendations regarding individual study, group and family study as well. Overall, the author's love of God and for The Chronicles of Narnia come shining though each page and I highly recommend this book!
I'd like to finish off this post with a favorite quote from this book ~ "Advent is a time to step into a world of imagination and wonder."
