A Plain and Sweet Christmas Romance Collection!

  • Publisher: Barbour Books (September 1, 2016)
  • ISBN-10: 1634097815
  • ISBN-13: 978-1634097819

Synopsis

Enjoy a simple Christmas, sweetened by love, in historical communities of plain faith people. Four romances develop among the Ohio River Valley Quakers of the mid-1800s. Two Mennonite couples face influences from outside their old traditions. Two Amish couples from the early 1900s are affected by world events. And in an Amana community, childhood sweethearts are reunited. Each story also includes a recipe for a sweet traditional treat.

One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is to read a few Christmas romances as a treat for myself. This year I chose to read A Plain and Sweet Christmas Romance Collection

The stories are full of the plain faith, community, love and the spirit of Christmas. With authors such as Melanie Dobson, Lauralee Bliss, Ramona Cecil, Diane Christner, Jerry Eicher, Olivia Newport, Rachael Phillips, Claire Sanders and Anna Shmidt .... how could it not be a wonderful Christmas read!

I highly recommend A Plain and Sweet Christmas Romance Collection and I plan on visiting these enchanting stories again and again throughout the year to keep the Christmas spirit alive all year long.

5 Stars!

Newton and Polly: A Novel of Amazing Grace by Jody Hedlund

  • Publisher: WaterBrook (September 20, 2016)
  • ISBN-10: 1601427646
  • ISBN-13: 978-1601427649

Synopsis

Now remembered as the author of the world’s most famous hymn, in the mid-eighteenth century as England and France stand on the brink of war, John Newton is a young sailor wandering aimlessly through life. His only duty is to report to his ship and avoid disgracing his father—until the night he hears Polly Catlett’s enchanting voice, caroling. He’s immediately smitten and determined to win her affection.

An intense connection quickly forms between the two, but John’s reckless spirit and disregard for the Christian life are concerns for the responsible, devout Polly. When an ill-fated stop at a tavern leaves John imprisoned and bound, Polly must choose to either stand by his side or walk out of his life forever. Will she forfeit her future for the man she loves?

Step back through the pages of history, to uncover the true love story behind a song that continues to stir the hearts and ignite the faith of millions around the globe.

Amazing Grace is one of my favorite hymns and when I came across Newton and Polly: A Novel of Amazing Grace by Jodi Hedlund, I snapped it up and couldn't wait to read it. While this book is a fictional account of John Newton's life and romance with Polly Cattlet, the story is based on true facts of both of their lives.

As always, Ms. Hedlund did a superb job with this story. The plot was creative, captivating  and filled with some surprising twists and turns. I found the characters and this story to be compelling!

I came away from reading Newton and Polly with the glow of reading a wonderful romance story and a much deeper appreciation and understanding of the hymn, Amazing Grace.  I highly recommend reading this book!

                   5 Stars!

Chet’s father and brothers always belittled him. As a squadron lead navigator, he longs to prove them wrong. He’s already been offered a terrific job with PanAm after the war. First he must survive his combat tour. Will he even have a future?

Soar Like Eagles is a wonderful historical fiction novel full of romance and faith. This historical fiction story is full of realistic characters and a plot that just jumped off the pages when I started reading it.

While this book is part of a series, it can be enjoyed as a stand alone book as well. I really, really enjoyed this book!

The chance of reconciliation with England moves further out to sea, leaving Elizabeth Elliott on the shores of surrender to a greater challenge. Although others of unwavering courage give her strength, she must choose to allow God's love to surround her. How can she enter into a marriage during a time of uncertainty? Will selfish, safer options take her away from Louis and his love?
