Farway Gaius McCarthy was born outside of time. The son of a time traveler from 2354 AD and a gladiator living in ancient Rome, Far's very existence defies the laws of nature. All he's ever wanted was to explore history for himself, but after failing his entrance exam into the government program, Far will have to settle for a position on the black market-captaining a time-traveling crew to steal valuables from the past.

During a routine heist on the sinking Titanic, Far meets a mysterious girl named Eliot who always seems to be one step ahead of him. Eliot has secrets-big ones-that will affect Far's life from beginning to end. Armed with the knowledge that history is not as steady as it seems, she will lead Far and his team on a race through time to set things right before the clock runs out.

Why this book?

Goodbye Beloved Friend ...

Our precious friend, Cubix passed away on July 27, 2017.

He came to us as an adult dog by way of our local animal control shelter the week of Thanksgiving 2009 and was often referred to as our "Thanksgiving" dog. We had a wonderful 8 years of love and joy with him and he was truly one of the family. One of his very favorite things to do was snuggle in a warm, cozy blanket even in the middle of summer if we kept the house too cool for his liking.

While he loved each and everyone of our family members, Cubix bonded with me and became my constant companion and best friend for 8 years. His unconditional love, friendship and loyalty was (and still is) awe inspiring and has blessed me in so many ways.

We are all richer for having him in our lives and we sorely miss him. We're happy though knowing that he is no longer in pain and can now run and play to his heart's delight.

Thank you Cubix for changing and blessing our lives.
We will never forget you and will love you forever!

Kindred by Octavia E Butler

Thanks to Goodreads Sci-Fi/Fantasy week I came across this book. It sounded so good, I jumped at the chance to read it ...

  • ISBN-10: 0807083690
  • ISBN-13: 978-0807083697

Dana, a modern black woman, is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South. Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, is drowning, and Dana has been summoned to save him. Dana is drawn back repeatedly through time to the slave quarters, and each time the stay grows longer, more arduous, and more dangerous until it is uncertain whether or not Dana's life will end, long before it has a chance to begin.

My Thoughts ...

Amazing, thrilling, bone-chilling, intense, frightening, at times offensive (historical cultural beliefs), intriguing, engaging, painful, mind boggling, creative, incredulous.

A truly mind-bending one of a kind
 sci-fi read!

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler  is one of the books that I am adding to my list of Life Time Favorite reads.  I was so taken with this book and the gambit of the emotions it created while I read it. This book moved me... body, heart and soul.

The concept of this book is phenomenal!  I could not put Kindred down and the whole time reading it, I was on the edge of my seat.  Ms. Butler brought to life the era of the antebellum south so much more vividly than any of the movies or TV series have been able to do for me.

The quality of writing by Ms. Butler is superb as well as the imagery and illustration she pens throughout her story.  The characters are well developed and this book has an intellectual depth that really engaged me.  Ms. Butler's story still haunts me  as I write this review, even though it's been almost a week since I've finished it.  I suspect it will continue to do so for quite a bit longer.

I can honestly understand why this author and book is lauded as a sci-fi classic. I am eagerly planning to read further works by Ms. Butler and will keep you all updated.  If you enjoy sci-fi, time travel and history, Kindred is a must read!

Thanks for stopping by and if you've read this book, I'd love to hear what you thought about it!

Shelby is nervous to start her senior year after spending the whole summer away from home. After all, it's hard to be carefree when you're trying to protect a secret.
Shelby was in a devastating car accident, and everyone in town thinks that she was undergoing more physical therapy in Denver. Instead, Shelby's mother enrolled her in a clinical program to stop the panic attacks that started after the crash. The treatment erased Shelby's memory of the accident, but she can't help feeling as if a piece of herself is missing, that the treatment took more than the doctors claimed.
So when Shelby starts hallucinating a boy with dark and mysterious eyes, she knows it must be a side-effect of the clinical program. Except you can't kiss hallucinations. And this boy insists that they know each other and are in love...

Why This Book?

I really enjoyed reading Ms. Collin's book, Until We Meet Again. It was such a beautifully written story that I have been waiting and waiting for her next release. I was really excited when I found out her next book is releasing at the beginning of October 2017!

Remember Me Always  sounds so intriguing that I just have to read this book to find out! Who is the mystery boy?  Why does Shelby feel like she's missing something? What happened in the car accident? Luckily, October is just aroud the corner! 😂

by Stephenie Meyers

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

In the not-too-distant future, the United Regions of America has formed. Governors hold territories instead of states, and while Washington, DC, is gone, the government has more control than ever before. For fifteen-year-old Vivica Wilkins, the daughter of a governor, this is life as usual. High school seems pretty much the same--until one day, that controlling power steps right through the door during study hall.

When Vivica speaks out to defend her pregnant friend against the harsh treatment of Population Management Officer Marina Ward, she has no idea she's sowing the seeds of a revolution in her own life. But it isn't long before she discovers her own illegal pregnancy. Now she has to decide whether to get the mandatory abortion--or follow her heart, try to keep the baby, and possibly ruin her mother's chances at becoming president.
A rebel group called the Emancipation Warriors, who are fighting to restore freedoms once held unalienable, offer her asylum. Can Vivica trust these rebels to help her or will they bring everything crashing down around her? Accepting their help may come with consequences she isn't ready to face.
Marissa Shrock's debut novel crafts a chilling story of what may be to come if we allow the economic and moral crises currently facing our country to change the foundations on which we built our independence--and of the difference one person can make when they choose to trust God's lead.

Sarah Parsons has never seen Amber House, the grand Maryland estate that's been in her family for three centuries. She's never walked its hedge maze nor found its secret chambers; she's never glimpsed the shades that haunt it, nor hunted for lost diamonds in its walls.

But all of that is about to change. After her grandmother passes away, Sarah and her friend Jackson decide to search for the diamonds--and the house comes alive. She discovers that she can see visions of the house's past, like the eighteenth-century sea captain who hid the jewels, or the glamorous great-grandmother driven mad by grief. She grows closer to both Jackson and a young man named Richard Hathaway, whose family histories are each deeply entwined with her own. But when the visions start to threaten the person she holds most dear, Sarah must do everything she can to get to the bottom of the house's secrets, and stop the course of history before it is cemented forever.

Sixteen-year-old Madeline Landry is practically Gentry royalty. Her ancestor developed the nuclear energy that has replaced electricity, and her parents exemplify the glamour of the upper class. As for Madeline, she would much rather read a book than attend yet another debutante ball. But when she learns about the devastating impact the Gentry lifestyle—her lifestyle—is having on those less fortunate, her whole world is turned upside down.  As Madeline begins to question everything she has been told, she finds herself increasingly drawn to handsome, beguiling David Dana, who seems to be hiding secrets of his own. Soon, rumors of war and rebellion start to spread, and Madeline finds herself at the center of it all. Ultimately, she must make a choice between duty—her family and the estate she loves dearly—and desire.

Fans of Ally Condie, Kiera Cass, Veronica Roth, and even Jane Austen will be enthralled by this breathtaking read.

A time-travel story that is both a poignant exploration of human identity and an absorbing tale of suspense.

It's natural to feel a little out of place when you're the new girl, but when Charlotte Makepeace wakes up after her first night at boarding school, she's baffled: everyone thinks she's a girl called Clare Mobley, and even more shockingly, it seems she has traveled forty years back in time to 1918. In the months to follow, Charlotte wakes alternately in her own time and in Clare's. And instead of having only one new set of rules to learn, she also has to contend with the unprecedented strangeness of being an entirely new person in an era she knows nothing about. Her teachers think she's slow, the other girls find her odd, and, as she spends more and more time in 1918, Charlotte starts to wonder if she remembers how to be Charlotte at all. If she doesn't figure out some way to get back to the world she knows before the end of the term, she might never have another chance.
